#Nursing home resident says she ‘just wants to die’ over isolation from loved ones

A 100-year-old Scottish woman told her family that she “just wants to die” after spending months at a nursing home without regular visits from loved ones due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a report.

Doreen Tilly has seen her well-being deteriorate from eight months of isolation at the Woodside Court Care Home in Fife, the Daily Record reported.

“The difference in my nan is just devastating to see. Before, she was full of life and thrived on regular visits from her family,” said her great-granddaughter Sonia Dixon, adding the reunions gave her “something to live for.”

But she said now Tilly has told her that she “just wants to die” as she struggles with being away from her family, which includes eight great-great-grandchildren.

“I can’t bear for this to go on any longer. I’m watching her fade away with the loneliness,” Dixon said.

“She has become really down and has been prescribed anti-depressants for the first time in her life at 100 years old.”

Dixon said that she believes that nursing home residents should have the right to see their loved ones.

“For someone who is 100, surely it should be up to them how much they see family members,” Dixon said.

Woodside Court Care Home said in a statement that they “understand how important visiting is and how difficult it is for all those who have missed out on precious moments over recent months.”

“While this is a challenging time for everyone, we must all work together to protect residents,” the nursing home said.

“With safety at the forefront of everything we do, a very difficult balancing act needs to be achieved which considers the health and wellbeing of all residents and the threat of coronavirus.”
