Following the success of Nothing’s first earbuds, the Nothing Ear 1, the company is back with a second pair of true wireless earbuds. After a few teasers in September, the Nothing Ear (stick) earbuds are finally official, starting at $99.
Odd name aside (but did you expect anything less), the new Nothing Ear stick earbuds are not a successor to the previous generation and instead a slightly more affordable option that’s missing a few features.
Now that the original Ear 1 is $149, these will slot in as the cheaper earbuds for those on a budget. The Nothing Ear (stick) buds don’t have active noise cancellation (ANC) nor come with silicone ear tips. However, some users prefer this style of earbud over an in-ear design, so it’ll depend on the person. Here’s a quick video showing off these stylish new clear plastic and white earbuds.
In terms of specs and design, these still have a lot going for them. The Nothing Ear (stick) has better battery life than the first generation, a sleek new carry case, and a neat revised design.
Nothing says the Ear Sticks offer seven hours of battery life and an additional 29 hours from the charging case. And when the battery dies, the charging case will get you two hours of playback after just 10 minutes. For comparison, Ear 1 barely lasts six hours, which drops to four hours with ANC enabled. However, Ear 1 did have a bigger charging case.
As for audio fidelity, there’s a new 12.6mm custom dynamic driver inside each bud. Nothing says it worked tirelessly to improve audio quality and even added a new “wind-proof and crowd-proof” technology to block out unwanted sounds. Then, a new Bass Lock mode will detect how much bass is lost during wear, and the equalizer can automatically adjust the sound profile. That sounds neat, and we’ll give it a test in our full review.
The earbuds have an IP54 rating for dust and water resistance, and Nothing also changed from touch controls to “press controls” on the stick, which should help with controlling the buds in any scenario.
