The new film Spider-Man: No Way Home has been smashing records since its recent debut in theaters, and that’s hardly a surprise given the clear interest in the sequel ahead of its release. While this movie served to conclude a trilogy of Spider-Man movies with Tom Holland in the lead, Marvel has already begun work on Spider-Man 4. Whether or not Holland returns as Peter Parker remains to be seen.

With Holland’s return still in doubt, the creative direction of the next Spider-Man movie is also unclear. Should the sequel continue the story with Holland back in the lead, there’s a good chance screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers would also come back to craft the story. As of now, however, they haven’t yet gotten a call. Per Comicbook.com, here’s what the duo had to say about their potential return in an interview with FandomWire.

“This is one where we don’t have to say that we’re not allowed to say because we truly don’t know. To my knowledge, I’m not aware of any future projects in the works. That doesn’t mean they don’t exist, but that’s nothing that you know anyone has talked to Chris and I about. I certainly hope so. I love Tom as Spider-Man. I hope there’s more, and I would love nothing more than to be involved. But at this point, we don’t know.”

Perhaps they don’t know because Tom Holland himself is also unsure. The 25-year-old has been sending out some mixed messages about whether or not he will be back in the fourth movie. In another recent interview, Holland teased that he’s open to continuing, as he loves the character, but he also feels like he’s done all he set out to do with the role.

“In all honesty, I don’t know the answer to that question,” Holland said regarding his return. “There have been conversations about the future of Spider-Man. Whether it will be with me, I’m not too sure yet. Maybe I’ll be a producer or something, I don’t know. But I do know that I love this character and I would be sad to say goodbye, but I have achieved basically everything I wanted to achieve as this character. I really think I’m gonna win the Oscar for this movie, so that’s great. So, I’m ready. I’m ready to say goodbye.”

Written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, Spider-Man: No Way Home is directed by Jon Watts, who’s moving on to helm the Fantastic Four reboot for Marvel Studios. Along with Holland as Peter Parker, returning stars from the previous Spidey movies include Zendaya as MJ, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, and Marisa Tomei as May Parker. Other actors featured in the blockbuster include Alfred Molina as Doc Ock, Jamie Foxx as Electro, and Willem Dafoe as Green Goblin, among many others. We’ll just leave it at that for the benefit of those yet to see the film.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is now playing in theaters everywhere, pulling in universal praise from critics and filmgoers alike.
