#No Way Home Will Not Be Considered for the 2022 BAFTAs

While Kevin Feige has made it clear Marvel Studios is pushing Spider-Man: No Way Home for Oscar glory, the epic superhero movie will not be in contention for the 2022 BAFTAs. According to a report by Deadline, Sony failed to upload the film to the online platform for BAFTA to consider before the window closed for entries to this year’s ceremony. BAFTA members were informed, and despite an attempt between the awards body and Sony, an exemption could not be made. Currently, any member logging on and viewing the movie sees only a two-minute trailer instead.

The report goes on to publish the statement from BAFTA, which details why the movie was not allowed to be considered by the panel when it comes to the vote ensuring “fairness and parity for all titles.” The full statement reads:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Spider-Man: No Way Home did not meet the eligibility criteria for the EE British Academy Film Awards 2022 and therefore did not qualify for entry. As outlined in our rulebook, all films must be made available to voting members on BAFTA View prior to Round One voting closing to ensure fairness and parity for all titles and the film was not made available by the distributor.”

The cutoff date for entries to the 2022 BAFTAs was January 3rd. While there is no confirmed reason why the movie was not entered, there is a pretty solid theory that is linked to the way entries must now be made online. BAFTA previously allowed DVD screeners to be submitted but introduced an online streaming option in 2020 ahead of the 2021 awards season. This year, all entries had to be submitted via the online platform, making it the first year that DVD screeners were not accepted. Many believe that Sony, worried about piracy from the online upload, decided not to submit while they were sticking to the movie’s exclusivity in theaters and simply wouldn’t bend to meet the BAFTA deadline.

While it is a blow to Marvel Studios, the BAFTAs is only one of the big awards ceremonies. Last month, it was made clear by Kevin Feige, Sony’s Tom Rothman and Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal that despite the lack of wins that have come Marvel’s way at the Oscars, that is the main prize that they are pushing for with Spider-Man: No Way Home.

“Just because they’re a certain kind of genre doesn’t mean they’re not quality movies. We all got in this business to make movies that people want to see, that make people feel things, and I think this movie legitimately does that,” Pascal said in December, to which Rothman added, “Quality commerciality is really hard to do. No Way Home is superb filmmaking. And this is what the Academy needs to stay connected to.”

Kevin Feige echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the power of the storytelling that Marvel has been doing and will continue to do in the future, which he believes deserves recognition as much as any other movie, regardless of genre. He said, “I think both of these types of films deserve recognition. It’s a good thing when people are in a theater and they stand up and cheer. It’s a good thing when people are wiping tears because they’re thinking back on their last 20 years of moviegoing and what it has meant to them. That, to me, is a very good thing — the sort of thing the Academy was founded, back in the day, to recognize.”
