#No sign that NYC’s surging violence will wane in 2021

Just minutes after New Year’s, a stray bullet struck a 33-year-old Brooklyn woman in her bed — showing all too clearly that while 2020 has finally ended, violence is still surging across the city.

That first victim of the year was taken to the hospital in stable condition. A 20-year-old Queens man wasn’t so lucky: He was killed about an hour later.

The madness grew Saturday when a 37-year-old woman in Queens was fatally shot. Hours later, a crazed man went on a wild, violent crime spree, striking several innocent victims in the head with a makeshift club, beating and threatening drivers, stealing two cars — and crashing both.

All this followed just days after dozens of teens on bicycles terrorized motorists and damaged their vehicles in two separate attacks.

Unchecked thuggery and untreated mental illness continue to fuel a frightening climate on city streets, after a year when murders rose more than 40 percent and more people were struck by gunfire than in the prior two years combined.

Even electing a new mayor in November may not stop it: As The Post noted Sunday, the leading candidates have said next to nothing about how they’d restore order. City Comptroller Scott Stringer has even pushed for further defunding of the NYPD.

Meanwhile, cops arrested a suspect in only 32 percent of last year’s shootings, and even among those nabbed, more than half are back roaming the streets. Plus, to trim a backlog of indictments, the courts are now eyeing “rocket dockets” — i.e., conferences instead of trials that insiders fear will result in dropped cases.

“If they dismiss hundreds of these cases,” said one cop, “we might as well do a remake of the movie ‘Escape from New York.’”

The 2020 pandemic might be curable with a vaccine, but the out-of-control violence won’t be reined in unless New Yorkers themselves demand leaders who make it their top priority.
