A firefighter from Texas was killed as she battled the California wildfires on the front lines with her son, officials said.

Diana Jones, 63, had joined her son Ian Shelly, a captain with the Cresson Volunteer Fire Department in Texas, to fight the Tatham Fire in Tehama County, California, the Redding Record Searchlight reported.

Jones was battling a rapidly moving blaze when it became more fierce Monday, prompting her and another firefighter to get into their truck to escape, news station KQED reported.

When they reversed the vehicle, it rolled off a backcountry road and plummeted about 15 feet down an embankment.

Jones was not able to escape the vehicle as it became engulfed in flames, while the other person was able to get out with burns that required hospitalization, the outlet reported.

“We’re all numb. We’re shell-shocked. She’ll be sorely missed,” Cresson Fire Chief Ron Becker told the outlet.

Jones had been a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician in Cresson for nearly five years, officials said. She and her son traveled to the Pacific Northwest to help battle wildfires in the past.
