#New Zealand mosque shooter gets sentenced to life without parole

The white supremacist who gunned down 51 people during Friday prayer at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, has been sentenced to life in prison without a chance for parole.

Brenton Harrison Tarrant, 29, received the maximum sentence for his horrific act of terror — marking the first time the sentence has been handed out in the country.

“Your actions were inhuman,” Judge Cameron Mander said at his Thursday sentencing. “You deliberately killed a 3-year-old infant as he clung to the leg of his father.”

The Australian terrorist carefully planned his massacre at the Al Noor and Linwood mosques. He spent years buying firearms and flew a drone over Al Noor to case out its exits. He intentionally picked a Friday, Muslims’ sacred day of worship, to cause the maximum number of fatalities possible.

Tarrant, who pleaded guilty to killing 51 people, showed no remorse after he was apprehended, telling cops that he wished he had killed more people and that he had planned to burn down the mosques.

He had posted a far-right screed online that laid out his desire to “incite violence” against Muslim people before he live-streamed his attack.

The massacre prompted Facebook to change its global policies around live-streaming and for New Zealand to pass new gun restrictions.

Before his sentencing, 90 survivors and family members confronted Tarrant in court as he sat stoically.

“I can’t forgive you,” said Maysoon Salama, whose son Ata Elayyan was killed in the attack. “You gave yourself the authority to take the souls of 51 people. Our only crime in your eyes is that we are Muslims.”

“You killed your own humanity and I don’t think the world will forgive you for your horrible crime,” Salama continued. “May you get the severest punishment for your evil act in this life, and hereafter.”
