#New York’s migrant nightmare CAN’T continue

“New York’s migrant nightmare CAN’T continue”

Four more busloads of migrants, including young kids, rolled into Port Authority on Monday, a harbinger of big trouble ahead.

Yes, Chief Justice John Roberts at least postponed the worst by preventing Wednesday’s scheduled end of Title 42, the one remaining Trump tool for restricting the migrant waves. But illegal entries have been rising steadily even with it in place.

Indeed, New York City has been reeling from the migrant crisis for months, and Monday’s buses still won’t be the last.

Mayor Eric Adams is rightly crying out to the heavens (and the feds) about it. “This can’t continue,” he said Sunday; “We have not gotten a dime from anyone. That has to stop. We need help,” he lamented late last week.

And no wonder: Some 31,000-plus migrants, having crossed the southern border among hundreds of thousands of others thanks to President Joe Biden’s feckless “wave them in” policies, have arrived in Gotham since spring. The vast majority got placed in our shelter system; the costs of the effort to accommodate them and ongoing arrivals will reach $1 billion a year through 2026, the city comptroller estimates.

That’s even as the city is already tightening its belt in the face of a $10 billion deficit, and our shelter system is now at capacity.

Washington has so far offered only the insistence that, per Adams, the Big Apple “should expect an influx of buses coming from the border.” Even without the added thousands expected post-Title 42, the city’s migrant crisis is still spiraling out of control.

Adams and other NYC electeds have asked for federal money and for expedited work authorizations for the migrants. Biden has responded with all-too-customary indifference to the suffering he’s caused. Gov. Kathy Hochul has weaseled again and again on the question of Upstate towns taking a share of the migrants coming into New York City.

So Adams’ words are dead on: This simply can’t continue. Something has to give, whether the city’s promises to illegal migrants or its services for everyone else — or Biden’s blithe refusal to get serious about the economic and humanitarian crisis he’s produced.
