New Yorkers are eligible for up to 20 additional weeks of unemployment benefits, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Thursday as he applauded state officials for the extra cushion during the coronavirus pandemic.

“While our federal government isn’t acting, I want to give credit to New York State,” the mayor said at his daily press briefing.

The 20 extra weeks of “extended benefits” is available to jobless New Yorkers as of the week ending July 5. It kicks in after exhausting all 26 weeks of traditional unemployment and 13 weeks offered as part of the federal CARES act during the pandemic, according to the state’s Department of Labor website.

No expiration date for the “extended benefits” has been set.

“Currently, New Yorkers qualify for extended benefits under federal rules, due to the state’s high rate of unemployment,” the site says. “As the unemployment rate changes, that may also change.”

Earlier this week, Republicans unveiled their HEALS act stimulus plan — which de Blasio has slammed as “nonstarter,” while reiterating warnings that 22,000 city workers will be laid off without a more workable stimulus package in place.

The mayor’s reminder that New Yorkers can receive an 20 additional weeks comes as the $600 in extra weekly unemployment pay ends Friday.

New York City’s unemployment rate is currently at 18 percent.

Small Business Services Commissioner Jonnel Doris on Thursday said his agency is providing free job training to people in areas including home health aide, commercial driving, building operations and cable installation.

The agency has worked with 500 employers to fill 9,800 jobs since mid-March and is currently working to fill 3,600 more jobs.

More than 54 million Americans have filed for unemployment since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
