The principle of “New Pokémon Snap” is explained quite simply. You get into the vehicle “Neo-One” and take a certain path. You will meet Pokémon on all sides that you should photograph in the best possible way with your camera. Since you got to the end of the lane, you choose the best from your photos and let Professor Mirror analyze them. Depending on the category, you will then receive points and stars.

As in the main parts of the “Pokémon” series, you help a professor with his research. This time it’s not about catching as many Pokemon as possible, but rather taking photos of them and finding out their behavior. You should also learn more about the Lumina phenomenon, Pokémon that glow brightly. We are accompanied by a story that relates to the past of the region in which the game is set, but this does not have a major impact on the main core of the game: the photography.

To add variety to photography, it shines “New Pokémon Snap” not only with varied areas such as a beach or a jungle, but also because the Pokémon sometimes react with different mechanics and items. Hungry Pokémon jump especially on velvet apples, Lumina balls make Pokémon shine and others dance to melodies built into the camera.

With enough photos and points, your research level increases per area, which changes the occurrence of the Pokémon – this also increases the frequency of the special reactions and moments of the Pokémon. In addition, there is also the possibility to take alternative routes, where you can then determine a path, which in turn enables you to photograph new Pokémon that you may have only seen from a distance. There are also orders from the professor to capture special moments, which are sometimes more and sometimes less easy. But this also gives you the motivation to visit the areas over and over again. As rewards for missions, there are new visual effects for editing.

Editing the photos is pretty simple here. You can adjust the brightness, increase the blurring and change the focus area and the focus distance, which all in all is a nice gimmick – you won’t spend several hours here, because the mode is too simple for that.

“New Pokémon Snap” clearly stands out from its other games in the franchise and is incredibly slowing-down, but it can also be challenging if you’re ambitious – and that too tickles the game out of you. So it can quickly happen that you visit the same area several times in a row, whether day or night, to take the one perfect photo and possibly pick up a few more points at the Professor Mirror. The game is definitely not for everyone, but if you want to experience the pocket monsters in a completely different way and can cope with the rather slow gameplay, you will definitely have fun with it.
