The first TV anime series aired in Japan from October 17, 1994 to November 27, 1995 for a total of 49 episodes. TMS Entertainment (then known as Tokyo Movie Shinsha) was in charge of the animation production. Discotek Media released the series in English as recently as 2017. The series also inspired several video games.

Another short OVA series titled Rayearth was released in 1997, featuring an alternate storyline with the same characters. It contained three episodes and TMS-Kyokuichi was the animation production company.

CLAMP’s fantasy manga series first ran in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine from November 1993 to February 1995. A sequel ran in the same magazine from March 1995 to April 1996. Three tankobon volumes were released in total. Tokyopop and Dark Horse Comics previously licensed the manga for release in North America.

Kodansha USA currently holds license for the manga’s English release and describes the synopsis as:

While on a field trip to Tokyo Tower, three teenage girls cross a magical portal and are transported to another world called Cefiro. There they are summoned through the last remaining strength of the Princess Emeraude, who believes the trio will become the magic knights who will save her, as prophesied by legend.
