#New iPhones will have OLED displays, but no chargers or earbuds: report

Apple’s cheaper iPhones will be getting a major upgrade this fall — but also will come without some basic accessories, according to a report.

Apple reportedly plans to release four new iPhone models later this year, which will serve as the successors to the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro family of devices. For the first time, the entire line will feature an OLED screen, according to Japan’s Nikkei Asian Review.

Previously, Apple’s lower-end iPhone models had an LCD screen, which is cheaper to produce.

The four new iPhones will come in three different screen sizes — the established 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, as well as a smaller 5.4 inch screen — which will all use Apple’s top-of-the-line technology,

OLED screens are more power efficient than their LCD counterparts, and can display darker blacks and brighter colors. It first introduced OLED with the iPhone X, and had previously reserved it only for its more expensive models.

“There will still be a notch, or ‘fringe,’ on the top of the iPhone, because Apple was unable to integrate the Face ID module into the display,” an executive-level source told the publication.

At the same time, Nikkei’s sources also confirmed that Apple will not be including a charger or earbuds in the box with its next iPhones.

Reports last week said that Apple is trying to shave costs by reducing the size of its packaging, which will reduce shipping costs. The bulkiest item in the phone’s packaging, besides the device itself, is the 18W power adapter.

As previously reported, Apple is dropping the complimentary pair of earbuds in the new iPhone’s packaging in order to increase demand for its already mega-popular AirPods wireless headphones.

The next iPhones are also rumored to have 5G hardware, which will allow the phones to access a network that promises faster internet and quicker response times than LTE.
