“”Vinland Saga”: That’s why there are 2 German synchros

Anyone who wants to see «Vinland Saga» in German is now spoiled for choice with 2 German synchros! You can find out more about the differences and comparisons here…

The history of “Vinland Saga” in the German-speaking area is not as long as the saga itself, but more exciting than many other blockbuster stories. While the 24-part first season first appeared exclusively in a simulcast on Amazon Prime Video in 2019, the series appeared in the programs of other providers after about 2 years. Netflix Japan started things off by adding German subtitles to the series in the catalog at the beginning of 2021.

Start of local publications

In spring 2021, the German disc publisher KAZÉ Anime (now renamed Crunchyroll) confirmed the license for German-speaking countries and planned a release in winter 2021/22. When the German dubbing became available on Netflix Japan in September 2021, fans began to speculate. Will “Vinland Saga” get another German dubbing on disc?

Double-produced synchros have already occurred a few times for films and series that were licensed to Netflix and a local publisher at the same time. (“Cobra Kai” and the films from “Violet Evergarden” and “The Seven Deadly Sins” are known as prominent examples.) Fortunately, KAZÉ Anime has secured the German dubbing of the first season commissioned by Netflix. This synchro was then released gradually on disc in Germany from the beginning of 2022 and on July 7th the complete version on Crunchyroll and Netflix DACH. The situation was different for languages such as English and French, in which two synchros were already created for season 1.

Season 2 puzzles

In October 2022 it became known (we reported) that Both Netflix and Crunchyroll season 2 of “Vinland Saga” in the weekly simulcast will show. Both platforms have been showing the series in OmU since January 10, 2023, but only Crunchyroll confirmed it in advance a German synchro for this series. The Crunchyroll-commissioned season 2 dubbing started on January 30, 2023 on the streaming page as Simuldub, but not only the customer had changed. The dubbing studio, the dubbing director, the voices of the main role and other characters have also changed compared to the first season. Interopa Film is no longer responsible as the studio, but TNT Media, Martin Irnich took over the role of director from René Dawn-Claude and Tommy Morgenstern can be heard as Thorfinn instead of Nico Sablik. Dawn-Claude at least contributes the dialogue books as in Season 1. When dubbing the first episode, Crunchyroll even had to hand in a version in which a cast had to be added later. (The audio track was corrected after about 3 weeks.)

Make 2 out of 1

And now is at Netflix a new German dubbing for season 2 popped up! The past day is at the first 3 episodes of the streaming giant, the German language option has been activated. This synchro features almost identical dialogue to the Crunchyroll synchro dialogue. It is therefore obvious that dialogue book author Dawn-Claude will again contribute the German texts to Netflix and take over the direction in the well-known Interopa Film studio. A confirmation by the information after the credits is still pending. Nico Sabllik continues to star as Thorfinn in this dubbed version. A detailed comparison of the most important similarities and changes are listed in the tables and can be heard in videos.

This is what «Vinland Saga» is about:

Anno 1002, Iceland: Six-year-old Thorfinn lives with his family in a small village by the sea. When he’s not helping at work, he listens intently to the adventurous stories about the wide world across the ocean. This peaceful everyday life is shattered when Floki, a commander of the Jomsvikings, shows up to bring Thorfinn’s father back to the battlefield. With the village taken hostage, Thors – also known as the “Troll of Yom” – must now confront his past and assemble a ship’s crew of enthusiastic young men. Thorfinn is denied boarding due to his age, but he manages to smuggle himself onto the ship. When the group wants to make a stopover in the Faroe Islands, they don’t expect a village as expected, but the barbaric Viking troop around Askeladd – he was hired by Floki to kill the traitor Thor…
