#Nearly 80 life-size, animatronic dinosaurs going up for auction

Dozens of animatronic dinosaurs are going up for auction next month.

T. rex fans will soon be able to turn their homes into personal dinotopias by bidding on the nearly 80 life-size, animatronic dinosaurs from Canada’s Able Auctions.

“There’s just about every type of dinosaur,” Jeremy Dodd, CEO of the online auctioneer, told the Vancouver Sun. “We also have a whole pile of authentic and original fossils and all the equipment that’s related to putting on a show like this.”

The nearly 80 dino doppelgangers include a towering Tyrannosaurus rex, a 72-foot Brontosaurus and Velociraptors, along with “hundreds of fossils, animatronic equipment, lighting, speakers and more,” per the listing on the British Columbia bidding site.

Able Auctions won’t disclose where they procured the prehistoric-looking props. However, the Vancouver Sun indicates that they could be leftovers from Dinoking Tech Inc., an animatronics firm that leased its attractions to museums and zoos in over 100 cities worldwide and the Vancouver-based Experiential Media Group, Dinoking’s parent company, filed for voluntary bankruptcy in May.

Dodd says that the robo-dinos are currently sitting in shipping containers at the auctioneer’s Langley, British Columbia-based warehouse and will be unloaded over the next two weeks.

“Some of them are broken down but we will be putting them together,” he said.

Bidding on the models will kick off Thursday, Aug. 6, at 9:30 a.m., following an in-person preview at the Able Auctions warehouse the previous day for masked visitors only. The gargantuan garage sale will be conducted entirely online due to coronavirus concerns.
