Amazin' But True Episode 21 Mets podcast
Charles Wenzelberg/New York Post

After what will be five straight days without a baseball game, the Mets will make up for it in short order beginning Tuesday. The team will play nine games in six days, featuring three doubleheaders — one against the Marlins Tuesday and then one Friday and Sunday against the Yankees. Buckle up. To get into the wild ride ahead, we present to you a brand new episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with me and Nelson Figueroa.

Figgie and I get started by diving right into what is ahead for the Mets this week after the postponed game against the Marlins and the entire series against the Yankees getting postponed. This will be an intriguing week with all the games as well as getting pitchers back from injuries. They badly need David Peterson and Michael Wacha in the rotation this week. They also are going to be forced into using Steven Matz and potentially Corey Oswalt at some point. How will the rotation shake out? Figgie will be watching Luis Rojas with a microscope as some important decisions loom. We also get into the trade deadline and why it would not make much sense for Brodie Van Wagenen to trade for anyone as a one-month rental and with all the uncertain circumstances of this 2020 season. Figgie talks about how good the Mets offense has been with an MLB-leading batting average, but the struggles with runners in scoring position dooming them. We also get into Jeff McNeil’s frustrations at the plate and I recommend his puppy Willow being allowed in the dugout to cheer him up.

Former Mets pitcher, five-time All-Star, five-time World Series champion and 1994 AL Cy Young Award winner David Cone then joins us. Cone talks about the 1988 season with the Mets and losing out to Orel Hershiser for the Cy Young Award. Him and Figgie talk about Hershiser’s impact on pitching and what made Cone so special to watch. Cone also gives a good breakdown of his laredo slider and where he got it from. The righty then gets into pitch counts in baseball, him throwing 130 pitches several times and ending up with an aneurysm in his arm. From one Cy Young winner to another, he discusses the lack of run support Jacob deGrom gets and him having the same thing happen to him, going 11-14 with the Royals in 1993, despite having a top-10 ERA in baseball.

The YES Network Yankees broadcaster then gets into coming to the Mets in 1987 and the team clearly having a rough offseason, looking raggedy in spring training and partying hard, having a bit of a championship hangover. He gets into his favorite Subway Series memories, including being part of the first one in 1997, why the games should stay, but changing the schedule where teams don’t have to travel around the country as much. Coney gets into coaching and why he has not gone that route, citing a pay cut, longer hours and more pressure trying to sleep at night. That leads to him talking about enjoying the YES Network broadcast booth, working with Paul O’Neill and agreeing with me that the Mets booth of Gary, Keith and Ron are the best in baseball. We wrap it up by hearing about his return to the Mets in 2003 to end his career, the injuries he dealt with and what it meant for him trying to get out there one more season.
