#National Independent Venues Association Urges White House and Congress to Prevent “Mass Collapse of this Industry”

In August, a number of independent music venues and promoters launched the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) in response to the financial strain on clubs and concert halls during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The goal of the organization is to “fight for the survival of independent venues, their employees, artists, fans and their communities.” Now, NIVA has shared a statement on the recent breakdown of COVID-19 relief talks, as President Trump announced earlier today (October 6). “We have been sounding the alarm since April that if our members don’t get emergency assistance, they will go under forever—and it’s happening,” NIVA’s director of communications Audrey Fix Schaefer said. Read NIVA’s full statement, which urges the White House and Congress to continue negotiations regarding COVID-19 relief, below.

We have been sounding the alarm since April that if our members don’t get emergency assistance, they will go under forever—and it’s happening. This is real. We need help. We urge Congress and the White House to continue negotiations and reach a deal quickly or there will be a mass collapse of this industry. The Save Our Stages Act has already passed the House and has strong bipartisan support with more than 160 Congresspeople cosponsoring because they know independent venues can be part of our country’s economic renewal once it’s safe to welcome people back—if our venues can survive this pandemic. We’re also hoping for the sake of our furloughed employees that the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance will be extended, as people are suffering through no fault of their own.

NIVA currently represents more than 2,800 members in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Just yesterday, it was announced that D.C. venue U Street Music Hall will shutter after ten years in business.
