Roberts was born on November 23, 1960. In an Instagram post celebrating her 60th birthday she wrote, “60 years ago today in Tuskegee, Alabama..I, Robin Rene Roberts, was blessed to enter this world as Lawrence and Lucimarian’s 4th child.”

Roberts (pictured far right) was a college athlete, playing tennis and basketball. She studied communications at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana. She is pictured here with her sister Sally-Ann Roberts, mother Lucimarian Roberts and father Colonel Lawrence E. Roberts.

Roberts began her broadcast journalism career as a sports reporter. She worked at various news outlets throughout Mississippi and Tennessee through the 1980s before joining ESPN in 1990. She is pictured here working with Mimi Griffin for ESPN in 1995.

In 2007, Roberts was diagnosed with breast cancer. By 2008, she had finished her rounds of chemotherapy and was in remission. She later went on to start the Robin Roberts Fund for Cancer Survivorship Research.

In 2012, Roberts was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, or MDS, a disease of the bone marrow. She had to eventually get a bone marrow transplant from her sister. “I received a life saving bone marrow transplant from my incredible big sister Sally-Ann. Following the transplant there were many difficult, challenging days and months. Was I frightened? The answer is…yes!! Thankfully I chose to focus on the fight and not the fright. I encourage you to do the same,” she wrote on social media.

Although they had been in relationship since 2005, Roberts and Amber Laign didn’t go public until 2013. She made a casual Facebook post for the holidays, which included her gratitude for her “long time girlfriend.”

At age 60, Roberts is ready for whatever life has to give her. “Being in good health is THE best birthday present and it’s comforting to know I already have numerous memories to be grateful for and many more to come,” she wrote on social media.
