#My Dress-up Darling wins Winter 2022 Anime of the Season in a Landslide

“My Dress-up Darling wins Winter 2022 Anime of the Season in a Landslide”

In an unprecedented moment in the history of Anime Trending, My Dress-up Darling took home a total of eight awards in Thursday’s Winter 2022 Anime Awards, which included the biggest prize of the night, the Anime of the Season title. This is the most dominant victory ever seen in any awards hosted by Anime Trending, whether it be seasonal or annual, beating the record previously set by Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai, which took home seven awards in the 5th Anime Trending Awards.

In the context of all the anime airing this season, this dominant win is even more impressive and astonishing. My Dress-up Darling battled against shonen heavyweights and household names, Attack on Titan, and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, which ranked second and third respectively. The 10th week of Anime Trending’s Winter 2022 Anime Rankings projected that My Dress-up Darling would win in the seasonal tally, as it scored its sixth weekly win, constituting a majority of the 11 charting weeks available. It further cemented its win as it also won in the final week — bringing its total weekly win tally to seven. Attack on Titan only had three wins, while Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba had one.

My Dress-up Darling racked up a total of 34,517 votes in the final seasonal vote tally, which is almost 3,000 votes higher than Attack on Titan, which registered 31,664 votes. This is the third largest winning margin of any anime in a seasonal tally. ERASED (Winter 2016) and Kaguya-sama: Love is War (Spring 2020) are the only anime ahead of My Dress-up Darling for that record, registering winning margins of 4,690 and 3,072 votes respectively.

This is the first-ever anime produced by CloverWorks that won the Anime of the Season title here at Anime Trending, finally doing so after many close calls in the past. Akebi’s Sailor Uniform, the other anime produced by CloverWorks this season, also had a decent finish at #4. CloverWorks came close to winning the title three times with Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai for Fall 2018, The Promised Neverland for Winter 2019, and Wonder Egg Priority for Winter 2021. The latter two finished third in their respective seasons while Bunny Girl Senpai finished second. With the studio having two anime produced finishing within the Top 5, this season was dubbed by a significant number of observers as a big redemption arc for CloverWorks considering the back-to-back controversy and fiasco that surrounded the finale of The Promised Neverland and Wonder Egg Priority last year.

My Dress-up Darling wins by almost 3K votes

Main Characters also breaking records

The lead characters of My Dress-up Darling, Wakana Gojou and Marin Kitagawa, also made Anime Trending history. Together, the pair won as this season’s Favorite Couple/Ship, and separately they won as this season’s Favorite Male Character and Favorite Female Character respectively. Gojou nearly swept the weekly male character charts, winning eight out of the nine weeks, only losing to Eren Yeager (Attack on Titan) in the first week. Meanwhile, Kitagawa swept the female character charts and became the new record holder for having the longest winning streak for a female character within a season. The previous record holder was Shirayuki from Snow White with the Red Hair who swept the Winter 2016 Female Character Charts. However, Shirayuki’s reign was only eight weeks long, while Kitagawa’s was nine. Kitagawa also now holds the record for the longest winning streak of any character alongside Souma Yukihira (Food Wars! Shokugeki no Souma).

As a pair, Gojou and Kitagawa became the first pairing to sweep the weekly couple/ship charts in the history of Anime Trending. Sajuna “Juju” Inui also won the Favorite Supporting Female Character award for My Dress-up Darling, with her younger sister coming in at a close second for the title — the first instance that siblings have simultaneously occupied the top two spots. The Favorite Supporting Male Character award is the only character award that did not go the way of My Dress-up Darling, as it instead went to Tengen Uzui from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.

Overall, this is the first instance that a single anime series won all the weekly charts. Anime Trending’s voting community usually split their votes between multiple anime series across the charts, so the results of this season’s polls are truly unprecedented.

Other Winners:

Aside from My Dress-up Darling, which took home eight of the 17 available awards, the other winners from last Thursday’s Winter 2022 Anime Awards included Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba with four awards and Life with an Ordinary Guy who Reincarnated into a Total Fantasy Knockout, The Genius Prince’s Guide to Raising a Nation out of Debt, The Case Study of Vanitas, and Tokyo 24th Ward with a single award each. Surprisingly, Attack on Titan,as this season’s runner-up did not win a single award this season — the first time this occurred for the series in Anime Trending’s seasonal polls.
