#Massive East Village fire spreads to nearby church

A massive blaze raced through a vacant East Village building early Saturday before spreading to a nearby church, the FDNY said.

Nearly 200 firefighters are navigating heavy rains as they battle the five-alarm fire that broke out just before 4:50 a.m. at the vacant building on East 7th Street.

FDNY officials said the flames began on the first floor of the five-story building and spread to the Middle Collegiate Church at 112 Second Avenue.

The roof of the 19th century Gothic Revival-style Reformed Church was engulfed a little more than an hour after the fire erupted.

“At this point there are no injuries reported,” an FDNY spokesman said.

The church, built in 1891, is co-affiliated with the United Church of Christ and the Reformed Church in America, according to its website.
