#Most Americans approve of Kamala Harris as Biden’s VP pick: poll

A majority of Americans approve of Joe Biden’s selection of Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate — including one-in-four Republicans, a poll released Sunday shows.

Fifty-four percent of Americans approve of Harris being picked for the 2020 Democratic ticket, while 29 percent disapprove, the ABC News/Washington Post poll found.

Democrats overwhelmingly support Harris as the veep choice, 86 percent to 6 percent, while among Republicans, 25 percent approve and 55 percent disapprove.

Independents approved by 52-29 percent.

Seventy-eight percent of black respondents approve of Harris’ selection, as do 65 percent of Hispanics and 46 percent of whites, the poll found.

Women backed the decision 56 to 29 percent, men 52 to 30 percent.

Sarah Palin enjoyed similar overall levels of approval when the late Sen. John McCain named her as his running mate in the 2008 election — 60 to 34 percent.

Among Republicans, disapproval of Harris is highest among conservatives, white evangelicals, rural residents and non college-educated white men — all core constituencies of President Trump.

Following Democrats and blacks, Harris’ approval is highest among liberals, residents of the Northeast, people with postgraduate degrees and urban dwellers.

Biden announced Harris as his running mate last Tuesday in a tweet, making the first-term senator the first woman of color to appear on the ticket of a major political party.

The poll surveyed a random sample of 1,001 adults between Aug. 12-15.

It has a plus/minus 3.5 percentage points margin of error.
