#Morocco foreign minster urges Biden to keep Trump deal

Morocco’s foreign minister is urging the incoming Biden administration to preserve a deal by President Trump to establish relations with Israel, according to a report.

Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita said the deal, which was sealed by Trump in early December, would be a step toward resuming diplomatic relations with Israel, Axios reported Wednesday.

The deal states that Morocco agrees to establish relations with Israel in exchange for the U.S. agreeing to recognize Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara territory.

“We hope the next administration will continue this positive dynamic and nourish what we have built because it was done for peace,” Bourita told Axios. “What we have here is a package which was signed and the first commitment that everyone made was to defend, promote and upgrade this package.”

Morocco and Israel worry the deal would fall apart if President-elect Biden plans to roll it back after he takes office in January.

Biden hasn’t publicly expressed if he agrees or disagrees with Trump’s deal.

Trump called the deal a “massive breakthrough” that would bring peace to the Middle East.

“Another HISTORIC breakthrough today! Our two GREAT friends Israel and the Kingdom of Morocco have agreed to full diplomatic relations — a massive breakthrough for peace in the Middle East!” the President tweeted on Dec. 10.

Morocco joins Bahrain, Sudan and the United Arab Emirates in setting aside decades-long hostilities toward Israel in hopes of stabilizing the Middle East and North Africa.
