#MODOK Has a Major Role in Ant-Man 3, But It’s Not Jim Carrey Playing the Marvel Villain?

A new rumor claims that Marvel supervillain M.O.D.O.K. will have a major role in upcoming MCU sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. While little more detail has been offered at this time regarding MODOK’s involvement, the character was reportedly featured in an early version of the Ant-Man 3 script, suggesting he could have simply been carried over into what became Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

Comedy legend Jim Carrey was recently rumored to be in-line to portray MODOK in the Ant-Man and the Wasp sequel, with the report claiming that the villain could debut as early as the Disney+ series, She-Hulk, as well as hinting that the character will have an arc which spans across both the small screen on Disney+ and the big screen in several Marvel movies. While some of these details could turn out to be true, this most rumor goes on to claim that Jim Carrey is not being looked at to star as MODOK in the MCU.

Regardless of Carrey’s involvement, the idea that MODOK will be making his live-action debut in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has been doing the rounds for some time, with the character’s origin fitting in nicely with the experimental lab work that is often on display in the Ant-Man franchise. For those unaware of the vast rogue’s gallery inhabiting the world of Marvel comics, M.O.D.O.K., which stands for Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing, began life as an employee for A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics). Possessing a genius-level intellect, M.O.D.O.K. was a human who underwent an experiment that caused him to mutate, giving him an incredibly large head, so large, in fact, that he requires the use of a floating chair in order to be mobile. Aside from the effect the experiment had on his looks, M.O.D.O.K. was also gifted with various powers, including extensive psychic abilities.

After obtaining his absurdly giant head thanks to this experiment, M.O.D.O.K. rebels against A.I.M., eventually taking over the organization and using their resources for his own nefarious purposes. MODOK would not be the first Ant-Man villain created thanks to a zany experiment gone wrong, though one can’t help but wonder where the character would fit in considering that Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror has already been confirmed as the movie’s antagonist.

While the giant-headed supervillain has yet to make his big screen debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, MODOK was recently introduced in stop-motion form in Hulu’s series, M.O.D.O.K., voiced by Patton Oswalt, who in the past has expressed interest in bringing the character to live-action life. “That’d be freaking awesome if we played MODOK live action. Oh my God. I would love it. Plus, it’s an acting job where I get to sit down the whole time. Are you kidding? I’d love that.” Oswalt was recently added to the MCU roster, playing Pip the Troll in a post-credits scene at the end of Eternals. However, should he also be chosen to have his head enlarged as MODOK, he would not be the first actor to play multiple Marvel roles.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 28, 2023, as part of Phase Four of the MCU. This comes to us from The Direct.
