The case of a missing model has become a true horror story…

Abby Choi had last been seen last Tuesday in the Tai Po region of Hong Kong. The investigation into the model’s disappearance was surprisingly short, for better or worse. On Friday, police searched a rental home which had been rented by Abby’s father-in-law in the village of Lung Mei. What they found there was unimaginably gruesome.

According to local news outlet RTHK, cops found clothing, an ID, and a credit card, all belonging to Abby — along with a person’s worth of dismembered body parts. Limbs later identified as Abby’s legs were found in the refrigerator unit. Regional police superintendent Alan Chung told the outlet over the weekend:

“The body parts that we found were inside the refrigerator – there were two legs that belonged to the female. We are still looking for the head. There are also other body parts that are missing, for example, the torso area, the hands, so we believe the suspect has already disposed of the body parts already.”

After a more thorough search, more of Abby was found. Police confirmed they found ribs and a human skull in one of two large cooking pots. In addition to the human remains, the pot also contained carrots and green radish, according to a report in The Straits Times. As shocking and hard to believe as it sounds, it seems the popular Instagram influencer was being cooked into soup.

The house was unfurnished and recently rented. It did however have a butcher’s setup installed – tools including a meat slicer and an electric saw. Superintendent Chung said police believe the home was rented with the express purpose of disposing of Abby’s body:

“Police also have found that the flat was arranged by cold-blooded killers meticulously. Tools that are used to dismember human bodies were found in the flat, including meat grinders, chainsaws, long raincoats, gloves, and masks.”

Why like this? Why treat the 28-year-old like meat and put her in a soup? That is unclear at this time. It does seem clear that a few people were working together to dispose of the body, what with the multiple raincoats and masks.

Abby’s ex-husband, Alex Kwong, 28, was arrested for her murder, reportedly while attempting to flee on a speedboat on Saturday. But he wasn’t alone – Abby’s in-laws were taken into custody, too. Alex’s elder brother Anthony Kwong, 31, and their father, Kwong Kau, 65 – who rented the apartment – were all charged with the model’s murder on Monday. Alex’s mother, Jenny Li, 63, was also arrested and charged with perverting the course of justice. All four are being held without bail, according to the Associated Press.

Police currently suspect Abby’s father-in-law Kau was the mastermind. But everyone helped. It is believed Abby was picked up in a large, seven-seater van and killed inside, then transported to the rental home.

According to Channel News Asia, Alex had $50k in cash and $400k in luxury watches on his person at the time of his arrest. Superintendent Chung told RTHK police learned in the course of the investigation that Abby and her ex’s whole family had financial disputes:

“We believe the victim and her ex-husband’s family had many financial disputes involving huge sums. Someone was dissatisfied with how the victim handled her assets, which became a motive to kill.”

Apparently Abby had planned to sell a property worth nearly $13 million. Money. We can’t imagine any amount of money which could make someone commit such heinous acts. Just horrible.
