#MLB mound visits will be masked and socially distant this season

In the 101-page operating manual for playing this season within a pandemic, MLB and the Players Association agreed that multiple players should not warm up on bullpen mounds next to each other and that pitchers should carry their own rosin bag to the mound.

You know what is not covered in the document?

Mound visits by coaches, managers and — when necessary — translators.

But the rule for this season is that visits are going to be allowed (as always), but with caveats open to interpretation. Namely whomever visits the mound from the dugout must do so wearing a mask, socially distancing and be quick about it.

In a stadium that will be more silent due to the lack of fans, distancing and relating a private message will be trickier — beyond figuring out just what distance is proper and what quick means.

Umpires will probably be responsible for deciding distance and time, but the understanding with the operating manual was that it was a living product that will have to be adapted as the sport is actually played and tries to determine best practices.
