Missy Elliott took to Twitter to offer her two cents on how artists can power through a sophomore slump, writing that the best course of action for any artist is just to experiment.

“Sophomore albums are a very PIVOTAL time for artist!” She wrote. “Here is a gem from MISSY! Your sophomore album may be stressful but it’s the BEST ALBUM TO EXPERIMENT on! Don’t be AFRAID! Becuz If u play safe you will be BOXED in & its hard to get out because your fans get used to that 1 sound.

“Secondly! Dear Artist Listen CLOSELY! Go with the songs you feel you should drop not what everyone else suggest! You the Artist must FEEL it YASELFbecause YOU are the one that have have to SELL it & CONVINCE ppl it’s HOT. Go with your GUT! Fearless.”

It seems Missy may have seen Cordae’s latest tweet, as the North Carolina-bred rapper realized after a four-hour road trip that he had fallen into this exact trap.

“Yo so I just drove on a lil 4 hour road trip and listened to both my albums front to back,” he wrote. “And fuck I must say it’s most definitely “The Lost Boy > FABEV lmaooo. My bad y’all. Ima do better next time. I got sumn to prove.”

It’s true that critics didn’t take to Cordae’s sophomore effort From a Bird’s Eye View. HipHopDX wrote the album was “sonically [copied] a sound between Nas’s It Was Written and J. Cole’s 4 Your Eyez Only [without] the lyrical depth,” and gave the project a 2.9 out of 5.
