A local Republican board member in Minnesota has resigned after posting a photo on Facebook that compared the North Star State’s coronavirus mask mandate to Jews wearing a star in concentration camps.

At first, the Wabasha County GOP insisted its Facebook page had been hacked, but state GOP Chairwoman Jennifer Carnahan on Tuesday said the image was posted by a county board member.

The politician, who has not been identified, has since resigned at the party’s request.

Carnahan said in a statement that Republicans are “saddened by the vitriolic post” and apologized “for this disappointing post.”

The photo of a Nazi officer telling a prisoner of war to wear the Star of David during the Holocaust was compared that to the statewide mask requirement imposed by Democratic Gov. Tim Walz.

The post received multiple negative comments and was condemned by the Jewish Community Relations Council.

“It’s a disgrace to the memory of WWII veterans as well as survivors of the Holocaust and anybody that fought,” said Steve Hunegs, executive director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas.

The Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party said the post wasn’t the only instance of the GOP linking a mask requirement to Naziism, citing recent remarks by a couple of legislative candidates.

The party also cited a tweet by Carnahan that likened Walz to North Korea despot Kim Jong Un.
