Secretary of State Mike Pompeo held a face-to-face meeting with his Chinese counterpart in Hawaii, where the two diplomats pledged to be more open as tensions have risen between Washington and Beijing over the coronavirus pandemic and China’s heavy-handed approach to Hong Kong protesters.

Pompeo held the in-person high-level talks with Yang Jiechi, their first since last August, at Hickham Air Force Base in Hawaii on Wednesday.

The secretary of state stressed “the need for fully-reciprocal dealings between the two nations,” State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said in a statement. “He also stressed the need for full transparency and information sharing to combat the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and prevent future outbreaks.”

Yang pressed Pompeo to respect China’s positions on key issues and to stop interfering in its internal affairs, China’s foreign ministry said.

It also said the two diplomats discussed Taiwan and the plight of the Muslim Uyghurs in the far west region of Xinjiang.

President Trump on Wednesday signed legislation approving sanctions to punish Chinese officials who are responsible for human rights abuses against the minority group.

Trump has blamed China for pressuring the World Health Organization to downplay the spread of COVID-19 in the early days of the pandemic and Beijing for failing to accurately report the number of coronavirus cases.

In an interview with Fox Business Network in May, President Trump said the landmark trade agreement between Washington and Beijing “doesn’t feel the same” since the pandemic upended the global economy.

“The big thing is they should have never let this happen,” Trump told Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo. “The ink was barely dry and the plague came over, and it doesn’t feel the same to me.”

The president has also threatened to end the special relationship the US has with Hong Kong, which would impact trade, because of China’s move to institute strict national security powers over Hong Kong.
