“The president is going to take this action to assure the American people that we’re listening. … We’re not going to defund the police, quite the contrary, we’re going to find new resources to help departments obtain certifications that improve standards for the use of force, improved training on deescalation and that’s exactly what the American people want us to do,” he said on “Fox & Friends.”
He said the executive order comes from talks with law enforcement officials and leaders in the African-American community – and as congressional Democrats and Republicans work on their own proposals.
Pence said the effort began with the death of George Floyd while in custody of the Minneapolis Police Department and the protests it sparked across the country.
He said Floyd’s death was a “national tragedy” and a “disgrace” but that the violence and looting that occurred in some cities is also a “disgrace and totally unacceptable.”
Trump on Monday said the executive order is about “law and order, but it’s about justice also and it’s about safety.”
“I think you’re going to see some things that a lot of people thought would not happen — you wouldn’t be able to get them done, but we’ll get them done,” Trump told reporters in the White House Cabinet Room.
