MLB is expected to release the official schedule this week, with the Braves at Citi Field on July 24 to kick off the Mets’ season, The Post has learned. The NL East rivals last faced each other in an opener in 2017.
The Post’s Joel Sherman and Andrew Marchand reported last week that MLB’s plan is to begin the season with Yankees at Nationals in a nationally televised game July 23. MLB has waited in announcing the schedule to allow for changes that could occur due to coronavirus concerns in certain regions.
In a 60-game season, the Mets are scheduled to face opponents from the NL East and AL East, reducing travel.
The Braves finished last season at Citi Field — a game won by the Mets on Dominic Smith’s walkoff homer in the 11th inning. The original 2020 schedule, which was scrapped because of the COVID-19 shutdown, had the Mets opening at home against the Nationals on March 26.
Amed Rosario and Marcus Stroman haven’t been working out with the team, but manager Luis Rojas indicated he expects both players to begin participating “soon.” Stroman tweeted he will be with the team Sunday.
“They are on progression and we expect them to come soon,” Rojas said. “We might have them [Sunday] here. We are staggering the guys, we are bringing the guys in three sessions and we are going on a daily-basis approach just to make sure that we’re fulfilling the protocol of maximizing the social distance.”
Rojas is enthusiastic about the veteran players added to the 60-man pool this week, a cast that includes Melky Cabrera, Gordon Beckham, Hunter Strickland and Jared Hughes.
“Those guys have been successful at the big league level and they can be great assets for us, too,” Rojas said. “We’re looking at the whole picture here of the guys in camp and have that vision that they can help us.”
The outfielder Cabrera is a candidate to play first base, if needed, according to Rojas. But the Mets are also well-stocked at the position, with Pete Alonso and Smith.
