#Mets vs. Orioles prediction: Over is the obvious play here

September 8, 2020 | 11:00am

John Means of the Baltimore Orioles and Michael Wacha of the New York Mets have had seasons to forget, but they will look to lower their ERAs when they collide on Tuesday night at Citi Field.

Means, an All-Star in 2019, has been hit hard in 2020, allowing eight home runs in 20 innings across six starts. He has given up six home runs over his past three starts and has a season ERA of 8.10.

Wacha’s ERA is not much better at 7.20, even as he’s actually reduced his walks per nine innings rate from 3.9 in 2019 to 3.2 in 2020 and is recording a career-high 12.2 strikeouts per nine innings. But he is giving up career-worsts 12.6 hits and 1.8 home runs per nine innings.

This pitching matchup is a rematch of their Sept. 4 showdown, which the Mets won, 9-4, as Wacha completed just three innings and Means gave up four runs including two home runs in 5¹/₃ innings.

The Mets entered Monday with MLB’s top team batting average and the Orioles were tied for second in the AL. So expect a pair of hot offenses and cold starters to add up to a high-scoring game.

The Play: Orioles-Mets total, Over 10.
