#Mets sign New York congressman’s son as an undrafted free agent

The Mets didn’t have to look far for one of their undrafted free agent signings.

Among the players they picked up was Joe Suozzi, a senior from Boston College who grew up in Glen Cove and whose father, Tom, is a congressman who represents parts of Long Island and Queens.

The outfielder hardly took a traditional path to the pros.

After graduating from Chaminade HS, Suozzi, went to BC without a scholarship and didn’t play for the Eagles his freshman year.

As a sophomore, Suozzi walked on to the team and earned a spot.

In his junior year, Suozzi hit .282 with three homers in 48 games and then got off to a fast start this year. He was hitting .414 with a homer and 16 RBIs in 15 games as a senior before the NCAA season was cut short because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The 6-foot-2 Suozzi also was named a co-captain before his senior season and had been pegged as a potential mid-round selection prior to the season’s early ending. The move has not been announced by the Mets.

Because of the pandemic, Major League Baseball cut last week’s amateur draft to just five rounds. Beginning Sunday, teams could sign an unlimited number of players for a maximum of $20,000 each.
