After a Mets player and coach tested positive for COVID-19 in Miami three weeks ago, the 60-year-old Davis — who has a pre-existing condition that places him in the “high risk” category if he were to contract the virus — considered himself fortunate to be separated from the team.
“I think about if that had been me, where would I be right now, being a high-risk person,” Davis told The Post on Thursday. “I think I made the right decision.”
Davis said his biggest concern as he weighed the possibility of joining the team this season was traveling to cities such as Miami and Atlanta, where rates of positive tests were high.
“Do I miss being there? Yeah, I do,” Davis said. “I didn’t sign up to work from home. I talk to the guys a lot, I do meetings with them and I am looking at pitchers all the time, staffs and I do the advance meetings with them via Zoom. But it’s not the same as being there and hands on, walking up to a guy and talking to him or have somebody come to you and be able to discuss what they are feeling and what the need to work on.
“Being on the bench is one of the things I miss. Being able to be involved in the game that way, personally, but at the end of the day, I think I made the right decision.”
These three games at Sahlen Field will be a homecoming of sorts for Jeurys Familia and pitching coach Jeremy Hefner, as both pitched for the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate in Buffalo in 2012. The team was relocated to Las Vegas the following season.
Jacob deGrom will be making his first career start against the Blue Jays. The right-hander entered Thursday leading the NL with a 1.69 ERA. The Indians’ Shane Bieber led MLB with a 1.25 ERA.
