#Massive crowd gathers on LES to mourn passing of influential rabbi

Scores of people gathered at the funeral of a Jewish religious leader on the Lower East Side Sunday mornings, according to a report.

The funeral of Rabbi Dovid Feinstein, an international figure in the Jewish community, happened at Mesivtha Tifereth Jerusalem, thelodownny.com reported. Photographs posted on the website appear to show several hundred people gathering at the yeshiva on East Broadway.

Feinstein, 91 — who died Friday — has led the yeshiva since the death of his father Rabbi Moshe Feinstein in 1986, The Jerusalem Post reported.

“The world has lost a gadol baTorah [giant of Torah]. We will miss his Torah leadership, his astounding and deeply insightful wisdom, as well as his warmth and accessibility,” the Orthodox Union, a Jewish organization, said in a statement.

“Aside from Rav Dovid Feinstein’s celebrated scholarship, his piety and modesty were legendary. Any interaction with him served as a lesson in how one can embrace one’s own humility without diminishing one’s sense of responsibility,” the OU said.

Mayor Bill de Blasio has criticized the Orthodox Jewish community for holding large funerals in Brooklyn. Governor Andrew Cuomo also asked the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community to stop holding packed religious gatherings to slow the spread of Covid-19.
