#Marvel’s What If…? Gets Early Renewal for Season 3 at Disney+

“Marvel’s What If…? Gets Early Renewal for Season 3 at Disney+”

More stories will be told in Marvel’s anthology series What If…? on Disney+. With Marvel returning to San Diego Comic-Con this year, a lot of big news came along with their presence, and that includes a lot of updates on upcoming animated content. Fans will be happy to know that it was revealed that What If…? has already been renewed at Disney+ for a third season, though season 2 is still in development and hasn’t even yet premiered on the streaming platform.

As reported by Deadline, the announcement came during Marvel Studios’ Animation Panel straight from director Bryan Andrews and writer AC Bradley. It’s not particularly surprising as the acclaimed series is currently up for multiple awards at the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards. That includes Chadwick Boseman earning a posthumous nod for his acting for the episode “What If… T’Challa Became a Star-Lord?” along with another acting nod for Jeffrey Wright as The Watcher for the episode “What If… Ultron Won?” The episode “What If… Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?” was also nominated for Outstanding Animated Program.

The first season premiered on Disney+ in August 2021 and wrapped up its eight-episode run in October. Bradley previously teased that season 2 will be hitting the streaming platform later in 2022, but an official premiere date has yet to be announced. But the show’s warm reception from fans along with its attention at the Emmys seems to have been enough to convince the higher-ups at Disney+ that it was safe to bet on a third season of the anthology series ahead of season 2’s arrival.

The What If…? Team Wants New Seasons Every Year

For as long as Disney wants to keep renewing the series, the What If…? team hopes to make new seasons to stream on Disney+ every year. Last year, producer Brad Winderbaum explained to Collider how their plan was to hopefully release a new season every year, and with the plan for season 2 to arrive in 2022 followed by season 3 in 2023, things seem to be going along according to that plan so far.

“As you know with animation, it takes a long time to produce,” Winderbaum said. “We were fortunate enough to get the green light on a second season early enough to have a chance to release it next year. We’ll see what happens. Obviously, I don’t want to predict the future with this new world we live in, but our intention is to make it an annual release.”

The concept of What If…? is that the anthology series uses animation to imagine how certain events may have turned out differently in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is not canon to the shows and movies in the MCU and allows for complete creativity with every episode, picturing entirely new scenarios such as Captain Carter becoming the first Avenger, Killmonger rescuing Tony Stark, and the invasion of the Marvel Zombies.

What If…? season 1 is streaming on Disney+. Seasons 2 and 3 don’t yet have premiere dates set.
