“Cucuruz Doan’s Island Scores 300 Million Yen in 1st Three Days”

The Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan Twitter account revealed on Sunday that the film had made 300 million yen (~US$2.3 million) at the Japanese box office, with the moviegoer count amounting to 150 thousand people. The movie debuted in the country on June 3.

Additionally, Kogyo Tsushin’s June 4 to June 5 weekend ranking lists the movie at 3rd place, putting it above anime competitors like The Quintessential Quintuplets movie, Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween, and Crayon Shin-chan: Mononoke Ninja Chinpuuden.

The previous Gundam movie, 2021’s Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway, also placed third for its first weekend, but earned over 500 million yen (~US$3.8 million) in its first three days. While Hathaway was competing with films like Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time (which took 1st place during Hathaway‘s debut weekend despite being in the 14th week of its run at the time), the Rurouni Kenshin: The Final movies, and Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet, Cucuruz Doan is arriving in a period where Top Gun: Maverick and Shin Ultraman, which premiered on May 13 and May 27 respectively, are dominating the Japanese box office.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island is based on the original Mobile Suit Gundam series’ 15th episode. The premise sees Amuro Ray and the White Base crew discovering an island inhabited by a Zeon deserter and several children.

Other staff includes Im Ga-Hee (Sonny Boy episode director) as assistant director, Toshizou Nemoto (Bakuten!!) as scriptwriter, Yuuji Kaneko (Josee, Tiger and the Fish) as art director, Nagisa Abe (SCARLET NEXUS) as color designer, Morihito Abe (Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway co-CG director) as CG director, and Takayuki Hattori (Space Brothers live-action movie) as music composer.

Additionally, Yasuhiko, Atsushi Tamura (Weathering with You co-character designer) and Tsukasa Kotobuki (Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin co-character designer) are serving as character designers, while Kunio Okawara (GUNDAM BREAKER BATTLOGUE co-mecha designer, Mobile Suit Gundam) and Kimitoshi Yamane (Mobile Fighter G Gundam and Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway co-mecha designer) are serving as mecha designers with Katoki. Sunrise is the animation production company.

Meanwhile, the cast includes Tooru Furuya as Amuro Ray, Shunsuke Takeuchi as Cucuruz Doan, Ken Narita as Bright Noa, Satomi Arai as Mirai Yashima, Megumi Han as Sayla Mass, Toshio Furukawa as Kai Shiden, Hideki Nakanishi as Hayato Kobayashi, Misato Fukuen as Fraw Bow, and Tomofumi Ikezoe as Sleggar Law.
