#Minnesota Twins’ older coaches will miss season amid coronavirus fears

The Minnesota Twins aren’t taking any risks when it comes to their two oldest coaches during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Twins informed 68-year-old bullpen coach Bob McClure and 66-year-old major league coach Bill Evers that they won’t be working games for the 2020 season due to COVID-19 fears, according to the Star Tribune.

The decision was made after the organization looked into the health histories of their staff members, taking age and pre-existing conditions into consideration. McClure and Evers will still be paid, per the Tribune.

The 2020 season would’ve been McClure’s first as the Twins bullpen coach after serving as the organization’s senior adviser to pitching development the previous two seasons. McClure replaced Jeremy Hefner, who was hired as the Mets pitching coach in December 2019.

Evers was entering his second season as the Twins’ major league coach. He previously worked in several different roles over 23 years with the Tampa Bay Rays organization, including as a minor league field coordinator in 2017-18.

The CDC says the coronavirus effects the elderly more than any other age group. The older someone is, the more likely they are to develop severe illness from COVID-19.
