#Many Revel riders still won’t wear helmets, DOT commissioner says

Many Revel riders are still eschewing helmets after the embattled scooter company was allowed to return to Big Apple streets, the city’s transit chief admitted Wednesday.

“Revel’s been back on the streets for about two weeks, and so far, mostly I’d say the reports are a little mixed,” Department of Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg testified to city council members.

“Particularly, I’m getting sent pictures of people not wearing helmets,” she explained.

The helmet aversion comes despite Revel’s new policy requiring customers to snap selfies of themselves in a helmet before riding — one of a handful of safety features added after three rider fatalities in the span of 10 days in July.

The rash of deaths included two victims who were not wearing helmets, according to police reports.

The third victim, a 32-year-old Brooklynite, died after crashing into a light pole in the center media on Woodhaven Boulevard in Queens, cops said.

In the aftermath of those crashes, Mayor Bill de Blasio had said the moped outfit would not be welcome back until city officials are “satisfied it can be done safely.”

Revel in turn added the selfie requirement along with a multiple-choice safety test and expanded in-person training offerings.

As part of the company’s  Aug. 27 return, Trottenberg also announced plans to create an official permitting process for Revel and other “micro-mobility” services — eventually.

The scooter-share service, which launched in New York City in 2018, boomed in popularity after the start of the coronavirus crisis in March. Its continued popularity is chief among the city’s reasons for allowing it back after just a month-long hiatus, Trottenberg told council members on Wednesday.

“Some of you [have] big concerns about safety and Revel, but I’ve heard from many on the council who say, ‘We love Revel, you have to re-open them, particularly at a time where we’re trying to discourage auto use,’ ” she said. “We’re trying to balance all those competing interests.”

A Revel rep insisted helmet selfies “are manually checked for compliance,” and violators will be suspended.

“We have been in regular communication with city officials and community leaders, including the DOT, and are committed to working together to create safer streets,” the rep said in a statement.

“We have been consistently enforcing our adjusted and strengthened suspension policies to further encourage responsible riding and user behavior.”

Trottenberg said she plans to meet with Revel execs on Friday.
