There is a cinema somewhere in the city center – founded in 1961, however, it only shows retro films today and bears the name “New Theater”. Hidden in one of the narrow and stuffy projection rooms behind the audience seats, Wakaba, a super-cool but also somewhat reserved projectionist, silently puts one film after the other into the projector. But even if she doesn’t suspect it, she has gathered many secret admirers …

Brief assessment

“Wakaba im Kino” is a Slice of Live series that ends with two manga volumes. The focus here is on the topic of cinema, which means that the series offers a welcome thematic change that is otherwise not known in this form. The technical aspects of a cinema are really well researched and are discussed in an expressive and understandable way.

In addition, the main character Wakaba, who initially seems a little introverted and withdrawn, came out of herself more and more in the course of the first volume. She is a strong woman, is personable and fun to learn more about. Even if the location remains quite monotonous in the long run and you focus very much on the cinema topic, this can be compensated for by empathetic characters and instructive facts. In addition, the series brings a good dose of humor and humor, without exaggerating. The drawing style is also rock solid and in the upper middle field.

For me personally, “Wakaba im Kino” does a lot of things right and offers a well thought-out and, above all, well-researched storyline. Especially now that the cinemas are about to reopen after the corona lockdown, the short manga series is a good transition and makes future visits to the cinema happy.
