A Colorado man has found a bizarre way to get closer to nature: by adorning his face with miniature hummingbird feeders, as seen in a fascinating new video.
“It’s a great way to practice patience, to be more connected with nature and to relax,” John-Reid Gordon, 53, tells Caters wire service of his unorthodox face wear.
In the clip filmed at Gordon’s home in the mountains, the bold bird-watcher is seen sporting a medley of nectar-dispensing devices while hummingbirds flit about just inches from his face.
The feeders range from a pacifier-like apparatus to sunglasses outfitted with faux flowers — the ornithological equivalent of Carmen Miranda’s fruit-adorned hats.
Gordon says he has to remain super still to prevent from scaring the diminutive diners away.
The bird-lover says he had initially installed normal feeders to carry on the tradition of his father, whose house he moved into six years ago.
However, Gordon eventually decided that wasn’t intimate enough.
“As I spent more time with the birds and became more knowledgeable of them I turned toward wanting to have closer interactions with them,” he says.
Naturally, some might deem his strange pastime for the birds, but Gordon says his “greatest pleasure is having a feeling of being connected to nature in a way that few people get to experience.”
He’s in good company with reality TV personality Spencer Pratt, who donned nectar-filled hats, glasses and hand-held feeders to attract his favorite birds.
“My hummingbird family is everything,” he tweeted in 2017.
