A rescue mission in the Alboran Sea off Spain is giving new meaning to the expression “hang ten.”

The Spanish coast guard has rescued a man who is said to have floated for three days atop a surfboard in open water after falling from a cruise ship.

Authorities aboard the coast-guard vessel Salvamar Vega found the 55-year-old man fully dressed in the water on Wednesday, off the coast of the Costa del Sol resort town Marbella. They were alerted about a man who had been spotted adrift in the ocean by crew members on a nearby yacht, called Estelar.

“Salvamar Vega yesterday rescued and took to Estepona a man discovered by a yacht 10 miles south-west of Marbella,” read a tweet by the account for the coast guard, Salvamento Marítimo, posted yesterday.

“He was adrift on a surfboard. The man who was rescued said he had been at sea for three days after falling from a ship.”

The missing man, described as British in local reports, claimed to have fallen from an as-yet-unidentified cruise ship three days prior. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital in Estepona Port to be treated for hypothermia.

Police could not be reached to confirm further details, according to multiple reports, leaving the question of how the man obtained the surfboard a mystery.

Said one follower of the story on Twitter, “He fell off a cruise ship with a surf board? How lucky is that.”
