“Man indicted for alleged fatal homeless stabbing spree”

The suspect charged in a series of stabbings that left a homeless man dead and two others wounded in New York City will undergo a mental health exam to see if he’s fit to stand trial, a judge ruled on Tuesday.

The exam was ordered by Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Diane Kiesel at the request of defense attorneys following Trevon Murphy’s indictment on charges of murder, attempted murder and assault in connection with two of the attacks, prosecutors said.

Murphy, 40, is accused of stabbing three homeless people, one fatally, during a week-long spree last month where he allegedly shoved a knife into the victims’ stomachs as they slept.

He allegedly first struck July 5 at about 3 a.m., knifing a 34-year-old man sleeping on a bench in Hudson River Park before fleeing across the West Side Highway, according to a criminal complaint. The victim died soon after in a hospital.

The next attack came on July 8, when a 59-year-old man was stabbed while sleeping on a bench near the corner of Madison Avenue and East 49th Street, prosecutors said.

Murphy is also suspected of stabbing a third homeless person who was sleeping on a basketball court at Stanley Isaacs Playground near East 95th Street and FDR Drive on July 11, the complaint states. But a grand jury has yet to indict him in connection with the third attack, the DA’s office said.

Prosecutors allege Murphy confessed to cops and appallingly admitted that he opted to knife victims in the lower abdomen as his “stabber’s choice.”

He allegedly told authorities he used a serrated blade so that he could “drag pieces of intestine out with it,” prosecutors alleged.

Murphy – who was also arrested for slugging his roommate at a homeless shelter in April – has been in jail since his July 15 arrest.

He has not entered a plea.

“These chilling attacks were committed against some of our most vulnerable community members,” District Attorney Alvin Bragg said in a statement. “It is unbelievably tragic that someone lost their life simply because they did not have the safety that comes with a roof over their head.”

“Nobody should face violence when they face the extraordinarily painful and difficult experience of being unhoused, and we will pursue full accountability and justice in this case,” the statement continued.

Murphy’s lawyer didn’t return a request for comment.
