A 37-year-old man was busted Wednesday for scrawling “slave owner” on the George Washington statue in Union Square Park, cops said.

The man was caught with brushes, bottles of acrylic paints and cans of spray paint just after 11:40 a.m., according to police.

Richard Maye was charged with two counts of making graffiti, criminal mischief and other misdemeanor graffiti charges, police said.

Maye did not immediately respond for comment.

Washington relied on hundreds of slaves to build his Mount Vernon, Va., estate, according to the group that runs a historical site there.

The vandalism was the latest incident as part of the nationwide backlash against historic American figures associated with racism amid protests over racial inequality and police brutality.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the statue of President Teddy Roosevelt at the American Museum of Natural History will be removed.
