#Man arrested for drilling holes in U-Hauls to steal gas

What a dumb gas!

A Georgia man was arrested after police said he drilled holes in a U-Haul’s fuel tank to steal gas, spilling gallons onto the street in the process.

But the messy thief and his car were caught on surveillance footage that made the rounds on social media and TV, resulting in a slew of tips to Griffin Police Department.

Jesse Smith, 25, was busted and charged with criminal damage to property and theft by taking, the department announced Thursday.

“Investigators are working to determine the appropriate charges related to the hazardous materials spill of the fuel and will add those charges as appropriate,” the department said in a statement.

The goofy scheme came amid the closure of the Colonial Pipeline, which created a gas-supply crisis and panic buying in the southeast part of the country.

The frenzy to stockpile gas led the US Consumer Product Safety Commission to issue a warning not to store fuel in plastic bags or pour it near an open flame.

After Griffin police were called to USA Storage for the gas spill on Wednesday, they posted a meme on their Facebook page complaining about the cleanup.

It read, “That face you make when someone drills holes into Uhaul trucks to steal gas creating a spill that your firefighters have to clean up in the rain.”

Later the department posted surveillance photos from the incident.

“So while you’re creating a hazardous material spill, for 5 gallons of gasoline and cause firefighters to have to work in the rain, we appreciate you parking your truck behind the KFC where we can obtain a photo of your get away vehicle,” the post said.

“Also, the shots of you walking around the U-Haul trucks are helpful.”
