The production of a follow-up title to Summer 2022’s Made in Abyss: The Sun Blazes Upon the Golden City has been decided, an announcement trailer published on the KADOKAWAanime YouTube channel has revealed.

Made in Abyss: The Sun Blazes Upon the Golden City was itself a sequel to 2017’s Made in Abyss anime series and the 2020 Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul anime movie. The anime is based on the Takeshobo-published dark fantasy/adventure manga by Akihito Tsukushi. 

Seven Seas Entertainment describes the manga as:

In an age when the corners of the world have been scoured for their secrets, only one place remains unexplored–a massive cave system known as the Abyss. Those who traverse its endless pits and labyrinth-like tunnels are known as Cave Raiders. A young orphan named Riko dreams of following in her mother’s footsteps as a Cave Raider, and when she meets a strange robot when exploring the Abyss, she’s one step closer to achieving her goal!

The first two seasons of Made in Abyss were directed by Masayuki Kojima with Hitoshi Haga as assistant director, Hideyuki Kurata as scriptwriter, Production I.G’s Kazuchika Kise as character designer, Takeshi Takakura as design leader, Inspired’s Osamu Masuyama as art director, Misao Yamashita as color designer, T2 Studio’s Tsunetaka Ema as photography director, Kevin Penkin as music composer, and Kinema Citrus as the animation production company.

Made in Abyss: The Sun Blazes Upon the Golden City saw the addition of Yuka Kuroda (Gekijouban Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight main animator) as co-character designer and Inspired’s Hikaru Sekiguchi (Hololive Alternative teaser PV) as co-art director, as well as the loss of Kou Yoshinari as creature designer.

The main cast of the series includes Miyu Tomita as Riko, Mariya Ise as Reg, and Shiori Izawa as Nanachi. Some of the additions in Season 2 include Misaki Kuno as Faputa, Yuka Terasaki as Vueko, Hiroaki Hirata as Wazukyan, and Mitsuki Saiga as Belaf.

The Made in Abyss manga began in 2012 and has 11 tankoubon volumes as of July 2022. It is serialized on Web Comic Gamma and published under the Bamboo Comics label.
