Looking to Bring A Furry Friend Home? Here’s Some Tips

There’s nothing better than bringing home a dog. They provide companionship and seem to make your house a home. However, it’s not always easy to bring home a new friend, especially if you have other fur babies in your home.

If you’re ready to add a furry friend to your home, there are many things that you need to consider. Here are some tips to ensure your transition is easy.

1. Decide How You Will Potty Train

If you want your new pup to succeed, you need to have a potty-training method in place. You will need to utilize crate training or puppy pads. Remember that these little dogs can’t hold their bladder as long as older pets, so you need to be very attentive and take them out often.

2. Don’t Just Buy Any Food

If you have other dogs in the home, you’re probably a pro at their diet. However, first-time pet parents might need to research the best food. Not all dogs have the same dietary needs, and you need to see how much and how often they need to be fed. You want your puppy to be healthy, which means getting proper nutrition.

Though it’s tempting to give them a nibble of table food, it’s the worst thing you can do for your pet. Not only will table scraps cause the dog to put on excessive weight, but many of the spices and additives are not healthy. Some foods, like raisins, grapes, garlic, and almonds, can be toxic for your pet.

3. Find a Vet

Who can pass up fluffy corgi puppies for sale? Once you bring the dog home, you need to establish them with a local vet. Your dog will need vet care to ensure its health. You always want to ensure you have heartworm testing, flea preventatives, and routine examinations were done on all your animals.

4. Decide Where They Will Sleep

While snuggling up to a puppy to sleep may seem nice, it’s not always the best thing for the dog. Remember, these dogs are small and can’t hold their bladder long so you may have an accident in your bed. It’s always best to keep them in a crate to sleep, especially if you’re using this method to train them. Additionally, a nice bed on the floor works well once they get accustomed to going outside to the restroom.

5. Ease Them into The Home if Other Animals are Present

When bringing home a dog, if there are other animals in the home, it’s not always best to just bring another dog onto their territory. It’s best to have them meet in a neutral space where the dominance issues aren’t as significant. Let them get used to one another before you make them share a space, as it helps with the acclimation process.

6. Find Effective Discipline Methods

Puppies aren’t usually well behaved, and they will require proper training. You don’t want to use some methods to correct their behavior, such as a newspaper, locking them in the cage in time out, and yelling at them. All of these methods can be counterproductive and may make the issue worse.

The best way to handle these situations is to look at them directly and talk quietly. Treats for positive reinforcement also work well. If a dog is barking and carrying on every time someone opens the door, yelling will only add fuel to the fire. There are many ways to discipline your dog that are healthy and not abusive. You can find free education websites online that will give you accurate tips on how to properly discipline your pup when they misbehave.

7. Socialize Your Dog Right Away

A dog that isn’t socialized will have significant behavioral issues, especially when someone knocks on the door or comes to visit. Get them out and among people and take them to a dog park. They need to be around other pets too. You never know when you might want to add another animal to the mix, and an unsocialized pet will have difficulty adjusting to the new fur friend.

Preparing For A New Fur Friend

Pets are like a member of the family, and sometimes it’s hard to remember that they’re animals with different needs. While you want them to sleep with you and feed them from the table, there are a few things you need to do to protect their health and longevity.
