On his new mixtape Flamerz 5, Meek Mill is attempting to recapture some of the magic that made the Philly rapper a voice to watch in the mid 2000s. The Flamerz series began in 2008, and Meek’s punchy flow and vivid raps about Philly street life helped him assert a strong sense of ownership over the beats, which were sourced from songs by other artists.

That tradition continues on Flamerz 5. Some of the instrumentals Meek jumps on include Kodak Black‘s “Super Gremlin,” Ice Spice‘s “Munch,” Lil Baby‘s “In A Minute,” Future‘s “Wait For You,” GloRilla‘s “Tomorrow,” Gunna‘s “Livin Wild,” and an 808-boosted version of Burna Boy‘s “Last Last.” There’s also a remix of DJ Khaled‘s Grammy-nominated “God Did” — despite my misgivings about the original song, I have to admit that the beat is ideal for Meek.
