Will Steve Cohen end up becoming the new owner of the Mets? That is the $2 billion question on the latest episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with me and former Met Nelson Figueroa. We talk about Cohen’s big pockets, his reported bid and the difference he could make to the future of the franchise. Figgie argues that spending a ton of money does not always equal championships.

We also talk about some Mets nuggets, including Marcus Stroman landing on the back cover of today’s New York Post. Is his fiery attitude on Twitter problematic at all? How important is this shortened season for Stroman? Figgie and I also talk about the projected Mets lineup and how dangerous they look heading into the season, if everyone can stay on the field.

NY Post baseball writer Dan Martin then drops by the pod for the first time. Martin talks about Cohen and what he would bring to the table if he owns the Mets. He also talks about Melky Cabrera and his role with the team, Yoenis Cespedes and if he will play left field more than DH-ing, the pitchers looking good at camp so far and what Jed Lowrie will or will not be able to do this season.

Former Mets reliever Turk Wendell then joins the show. Wendell talks about the 60-game season, rule changes and what he is not a fan of in the game and in ballparks. We look back to the memorable 2000 Mets in the 20th anniversary year of their National League pennant. Wendell talks about why that team was special and why he liked being managed by Bobby Valentine. Wendell is one of the most superstitious players ever in sports. He speaks about some of his superstitions and why he was that way. The right-hander pitched with the Phillies after the Mets and he talks about the death threats in letters he would receive from Phillies fans.

Wendell on 2000 Mets:

“I look at it as a real unique group of guys that the camaraderie was second to none. And the thing that really separated it was, yeah, we didn’t it…yeah Piazza was our big superstar player…and it wasn’t like we had five or six or eight superstar players, that camaraderie a lot of teams try to buy, but when you get all these really good players, their egos clash and that was the thing that made us so special. None of us cared who the hero was today or who was gonna be the hero, as long as we won the game, that’s all that matters. It wasn’t one guy who was trying to steal the spotlight and that’s what made us from good to very good.”

Wendell on viewing himself as a Met:

“Absolutely. I don’t really have any ties to the Cubs unfortunately. I do a lot of stuff for the Mets and whenever I’m around the New York area. Truth be told, I never wanted to play in New York. I’m a Red Sox fan, grew up in Massachusetts, so I despised the Yankees and I don’t like big cities, so I said I never wanted to play in New York for those reasons. As most baseball players know, you can think whatever you want, but just don’t say it out loud because baseball Gods, they’re always listening. And the baseball Gods bit me in the ass, I got traded to the Mets and hands down, it was absolutely the best thing that happened to me in my career.”

Wendell on getting death threats from Phillies fans while playing there:

“Well I mean, I’m not going to sugar coat that either. When I came over to the Phillies, I mean, I sucked. I was getting paid a lot of money so I’m trying to push myself to honor the amount of money that I was making. You know, my elbow was sore and I’m not really gonna say anything and that’s just probably my stupid competitiveness, too. I try to tell kids today play the game smarter, not harder. But I want to live up to the contract that I’m being paid. So I’m not pitching well and I’m getting fan mail that says they wish I’d die, that if they saw me, they’d kill me, they wish I was in the Twin Towers when they went down. All this kind of crazy stuff…and you know getting all kinds of different death threats, thinking what the heck? I’m just here to play ball. That’s the one thing I liked about New York. When I pitched bad I said ‘Hey, you know what, I pitched bad and I’m gonna be better tomorrow,’ and I think that’s one of the reasons why I don’t remember a lot of games because when the game was over, to me it was over and done with. I was looking forward to pitching in the next game, the next day. That was my only goal when the game was over is the next game…and it was a tough adjustment to play in Philly as opposed to New York because of that fan mail and that fan base wanted me dead, pretty much. Not everybody, I shouldn’t classify that as all the fans, but I came off the field in one particular game and my elbow kind of just blew up and I blew a game against the Braves, I think it was. The media was in front of me at my locker and they said you know what about the fans. And they’re yelling at me as I’m coming off the field and I kind of motioned to them, ‘If you don’t like it then go home, no one’s making you sit here and watch me suck.’ So they said, ‘What about the fans?’ And I said ‘You wanna see what kind of fans you’ve got?’ And I turned around and I read them one of those letters. They all sat there in awe and said ‘I can’t believe people actually sent that.’ So then I had surgery and I came back from surgery and I’m pitching really well. … One of the reporters asked me, ‘Aren’t you glad the fans are on your side now and they’re rooting for you cause you’re pitching well?’ And I said ‘Not really, if they’re true fans they should boo me now, too. They shouldn’t just jump on the bandwagon.’ If you don’t like somebody you don’t like somebody. Don’t just like em’ cause you’re doing well and hate em’ cause you’re doing bad.”

Figgie and I have some big guests planned ahead with new episodes coming out Mondays and Thursdays throughout spring training 2.0 and twice a week throughout the season. Follow us on Twitter @JakeBrownRadio & @FiggieNY to keep up with guests coming on the show.
