Only The Family founder Lil Durk has attained the kind of success most rappers only dream of — but he wants more.

On Thursday (October 14), the 28-year-old Chicago native vowed to get his high school diploma after dropping out as a teen with, “I’m going to get my high school diploma. I want to challenge myself on my goals and real life situations.”

Lil Durk has endured a series of tragedies since he was a kid, beginning with his father being sentenced to two life sentences without the possibility of parole. In 2014, his cousin OTF Nunu was murdered. A year later, Durk’s friend and manager, OTF Chino Dolla, was shot and killed, as well.

Then came King Von’s shooting death in 2020 followed by the death of his older brother DThang who was killed outside of a Chicago strip club in June.

Despite the odds, Lil Durk has persevered. In April 2020, Durk made his first appearance on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Viral Moment” from his fifth studio album, Just Cause Y’all Waited 2. His commercial success continued with singles such as “3 Headed Goat” featuring Polo G and Lil Baby, “Backdoor” and “The Voice,” as well as his feature on Drake’s 2020 single, “Laugh Now Cry Later.”

His star power continued to rise with his appearance on Pooh Shiesty’s “Back in Blood,” his solo album The Voice and subsequent joint album with Lil Baby, The Voice of the Heroes, his first album to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Lil Durk and Lil Baby are currently on the Back Outside Tour, which continues in Tampa, Florida on Thursday (October 14).
