It’s been quite the enduring journey for Lil Durk to reach the mountaintop of mainstream acclaim when he earned his first No. 1 solo album on Sunday (March 20) with 7220 after selling 120,500 total album-equivalent units, according to Billboard.

“I got a real #1 album I came a long way and really ain’t suppose to be here,” Durk wrote to Instagram on Sunday night (March 20) while reflecting on the achievement. “I been here 10years and still feel like a new artist thank my team and thank my label and the fans …. Ps a real #1 not a fake one.”

Durk rose from the concrete as part of Chicago’s drill music scene during the early 2010s. His flame eventually burned out at Def Jam and he was forced to pivot in 2018 when he tried his hand independently.

The Chicago native traded in the Windy City for Hip Hop’s centrifugal force of Atlanta where he began his mainstream ascension as part of the Alamo Records family, which has culminated in his first solo No. 1 album over a decade since his rapping career began.

The 29-year-old also topped the Billboard 200 in 2021 with his collaborative The Voice of the Heroes project with Lil Baby. Durk previously came to close to earning a solo No. 1 album with 2020’s Just Cause Y’all Waited 2 (No. 2) and The Voice (No. 2).

Lil Durk compared himself to Steph Curry last week because he “can’t miss” at this point and hasn’t shown any reason he’ll be slowing down in the future. Durk also released “Computer Murderers” as a 7220 bonus track, where he taunts Chicago rival FBG Wooski.
