#LI drunk driver gets maximum sentence for killing Boy Scout

The Long Island man who drunkenly plowed his SUV into a group of hiking Boy Scouts, killing a 12-year-old, was sentenced to more than eight years behind bars Wednesday — exactly two years after the crash.

State Supreme Court Justice Fernando Camacho denied Thomas Murphy’s request for second trial, and immediately slapped him with the maximum sentence of 8 1/3 to 25 years in prison for vehicular homicide.

“Mr. Murphy, you have caused tremendous destruction,” Camacho told the defendant, WABC reported.

Members of Troop 161 were heading north on the shoulder of David Terry Road in Manorville on Sept. 30, 2018 when Murphy, of Holbrook, slammed into them with his white 2016 Mercedes, killing Andrew McMorris.

Cops found Murphy reeking of booze, and he later admitted to having downed vodka drinks at a nearby golf course before he drove off.

He declined an initial plea deal, forcing a trial against the wishes of the McMorris family.

In his defense, Murphy, who refused a blood alcohol test, denied being drunk and attempted to pin blame on scout leaders for poor child supervision.

He was found guilty of aggravated vehicular homicide, assault and driving while intoxicated in December, but his sentencing was delayed due to COVID-19 and his request for a retrial.

Wednesday marked the two year anniversary of the fatal collision, which also injured three other boys.

“He should’ve been locked up two years ago,” McMorris family friend Torre Cintorino told WABC.

“He’s been letting this family suffer for way too long.”
